Useful advice

Hey guyssss,

I've  been coping with my own stuff lately and was unable to update my blog. So sorry ! For now , I would like to ask you if you have been coping with your  math well . Is it easy? I hope so!

Again, for the P5s , next year is your PSLE ! Study hard ! I must say that to get full marks for Math is really possible. However, there are still people who have not got the hang of solving Math sums . If you are one of them, I advise you to buck up now!

Grab this opportunity NOW! Please use the December holidays to try out the new Math sums for the topics in P6. Train yourself for all the different types of useful methods which can be adapted for many challenging questions. Do not rest on your laurels once you think that you know everything. Everyday is a learning opportunity. Do not waste it! Memorise and understand the solutions to the mind-boggling sums.

Needless to say, also study your other subjects- English, Science and Mother Tongue.  They are equally important.

Graph

Graphs are just testing you on how well you can read them. It shows things clearly. Some questions include graphs to give you a more vivid information.

Now, try this question!

It's easy, isn't it?

a)125
b)Mar/March

The previous question was a line graph. Now, I am showing you an example of a pie chart. Reading pie graphs is not a worry too.You just need to take note of the hints and clues which are present in the question.
Try this!

The pie chart below shows the various types of  hobbies of the students. 65 students enjoy playing sports. The number of students who enjoy watching TV is 1/5 of the total number of students.
a)Find the total number of students

b)If students who like to read made up 30% of the student population and there are 26 less students who enjoy cooking than watching TV, how many percent was the number of students who enjoy cooking?

 Answer it NOW!!!!!

Angles

Angles is a small topic. Some of its questions are easy but some are just challenging. As you are going from P4-P6, the type of angles questions will grow harder as you learn about more shapes.
Here is one simple angle question: TRY IT!

This is one of the basic angles question.
Straight line is 180°
180-95=85
90-53=37
37+85=122

Ans:122°

Pattern

Those who think that they are not very good at patterns, come look here immediately! Don't worry, with this method, solving pattern problems will be so EASY! Pattern questions usually have questions a) b) or even c).

Some questions are just like these: they give you a table and put a certain number of shapes in each figure. Then they may ask you how many of these shapes are there in figure ...
This is an eg of a simple pattern question.

So, for pattern questions,all you need to do is to find a pattern. The number of stars increased in each ascending figure. Increased by how many between the figures?
Figure 1--->3
Figure 2--->7
Figure 3--->11
There is an increase in 4 at every interval. Once you get this hint, use it!
Just remember this formula for this type of question.
FORMULA: Fig no. x every increase (interval) - a no. = no of unit shapes in the figure
So we'll use Figure 1 as an example:
Fig no. x every increase (interval) - a no. = no of unit shapes in the figure
 1x4-?=3
 ?=1
 Figure 2(using this formula)
 2x4-1=7!

After getting the formula for each question, solving pattern questions will be a breeze!

The answer:
a)15x4-1=59
b)Work backwards. Instead of minusing 1,add 1. Instead of times 4 , divide 4 .
  2219+1=2220
  2220/4=555

Ans:a)59 stars
       b)Pattern no.555

Is math interesting?

Maths is definitely interesting. However,first of all you must know this subject well in order to appreciate numbers and make maths interesting. Math is very important subject. Don't you agree ? Because you need math for almost everything.
Below are the examples which states:
All this are Maths
-When you need to pay the money to the cashier,you need to count.
- Maybe, your mum asks you to buy 15 apples from the supermarket. You also need to count!
- If you are a salesperson and your shop is having a sale, you also need to calculate how much discount to give. But still, you have to earn a profit. Eg a percentage % discount
- For instance, you have a certain amount of money to buy things. You also need to count and deduct the money you have and save them for the more important items you need to purchase.
- You will be able to read the time efficiently and quickly.

       And there are much much much much much more!

This certainly shows that maths is so important!

Studying

So PSLE is an entry examination to a secondary school. Of course, it tests you on the knowledge you have grabbed hold of in the past 6 years ( mainly from P4-P6) .

Many would say that this exam is very important and all the P6s must study very hard to compete with one another. Is this entirely true? To me, it's a NO. The vital points you must have to excel are to listen attentively in class, do your work diligently and make the mistakes you have made a lesson to learn. If you study very hard but do not listen in class, then what's the point? Every word your teacher says should be taken in.

STUDYING

Studying is the process whereby you read through and understand a certain subject or topic. My advice to you is to study only what is in your syllabus. Do not over study! Sometimes you may think having  more  knowledge than the rest will give you a better advantage . This can be an advantage for you but not all the time . Hence you should  go deeper in the insights of the topic( if you want ) only after you finish studying the topics in your syllabus .
This is an example :
For instance, you know that digestive juice are added at the stomach and small intestine . Nevertheless,you need not know in depth about what else are added and what ' things' are inside the digestive enzymes. Be straight to the point! Remember, this exam is seeing what you have learnt so far and not trying to make you feel nervous and afraid. Ok?

Formulas

Circles
Perimeter--->π x diameter of circle
Area       --->π x radius x radius
Diameter is 2 times the radius of the same circle.

Speed
Use the table above to solve any speed questions.
D--->Distance
S--->Speed
T--->Time
SxT=D(IMPORTANT!!!!!)

New topics in P6

The most critical year out of your entire primary school life is of course Primary Six- when you sit for the Primary School Leaving Examination. From P5 to P6 , there isn't much change but of course there still is!

Math
-Algebra
-Nets
-Circle
-Speed

Algebra is a very useful method. You can use it to solve different types of questions. Each letter you use will represent the unknown. Magically, using Algebra, the unknown will turn into KNOWN!

Here is a simple question:
 10e+15-5e-7=?
Break them up into groups of e and whole number.
There are 10e-5e=5e
and 15-7=8
So the answer is 5e+8!

I used Algebra for Q1 (Renee and Lucy )
It is useful and efficient! Learn Algebra now!!!

Nets
Actually, for nets, you just have to memorise and visualise the different type of nets to form a 3D figure.
The figures include:
-Cube
-Cuboid
-Pyramid
-Prism
-Cylinder
...

Circles
This topic is quite challenging but if you get the hang of it, then it's easy!!!

π=3.14  /  22/7
In some questions , they will ask you to write your answer in terms of π or in terms of the calculator value of π. They can indicate in the question the value of π .
eg π=3.14
or π =22/7

The equation to find the perimeter and area of a circle states:
Perimeter---> π x diameter of circle
 Area      --->π x radius of circle x radius of circle

eg:

Strategies to solve a sum (1)

Act it out
Take on the role of the people,things or process in the problem and try to do what the do. It may sometimes be helpful to make use of objects to represent the situation or problem.

Use a diagram/model
 Draw a diagram/model to create a pictorial description of the problem. Thia helps you to visualise and understand the problem. It also helps you to 'manipulate' the data.

Make a systematic list(guess & check)
Organise the data. Make a table. This helps you to identify and spot the unknown asked for in the problem.

Look for a pattern(pattern questions)
Examine the available data for patterns or relationships. Having perceived a pattern, you can predict or guess the unknown data or answer.

Work backwards
Look at the end results and work backwards towards the beginning. This is good for problems involving a series of steps or computations. It is also when the problem gives more data about the end condition and little data in the beginning.

Different math methods

Use these methods especially those who are in P5  this year we taking the PSLE next year-2015.
This will be the first and small milestone in the part of your whole life. This national exam will determine the secondary school you will go to. So pull up your socks and strive for the best!

Here are some methods you may use:
-Model
-Branch/Branch down
-Ratio
-Equal fractions
-Cross Multiply
-Assumption
-Guess & Check

and of course many more you will discover over the next few days!

Intro

Hey guysss,

This is MathwaytoGO!!!ok so I'm a P6 student. My strongest subject is math. Having just finished the recent PSLE, I decided to create this blog to help primary school students in their math. Hence, if you any any problems in a certain sum, do not hesitate but approach me! You just need to type out the question onto any comments space.  I'll try my best to help you.I'll also post some challenging questions periodically and you can try to answer them.

Don't worry for your maths! Most importantly, you just have to note down the various methods I'll will be teaching you in the following days. :)

I luv Maths

Math to start of, is a very interesting topic. Nonetheless, many students find it really challenging to do math due to the complexity, when in fact, the question though on the surface may seem tough, is in fact, not as tough as it is.

You just need to remember a few really useful methods which I will share with you over the days.

Do remember to share it with your friends and family if you find this blog useful.
